This may not be possible, or more likely it is possible but too complicated or time consuming to implement. But nevertheless I will suggest it.
Playing a wizard and to a lesser degree a cleric and druid, my spellbook is often quite different when playing different areas. "Sure, illithid run? Be right there! Oh wait, my spells are all set up for desert. Click, click, click, click .... Oh, run's almost over? click, click, click, ... What, we're going to ssith now? Oh come on... Click, click, click, click, click ..." What was not a huge deal with wizards having 9 total level 9 spells gets to be a real chore with 30.
What sure would be nice is an item (ala autocaster or scry) that would present a choice "1. Record spellbook. 2. Set spellbook." and under these options of (record/set) books say 1-5. This would let one have up to 5 recorded spellbooks. Now it's "Oh, illithid run? Set spellbook. Book 3." OK, spells all set up, ready to rest and port. This would save a bunch of time for spellbook casters (and the parties that sit around waiting for them).
There are issues with varying numbers of spells based on items and stats (e.g. memmed when you had 27 level 9 spells, set spellbook when you only have 15 slots). Presumably any slots you don't have any more get ignored, and if you now have more slots, the extras just get left blank. It's easy enough for the user to fill them in and hit "Set spellbook". Similarly easy for them to make minor tweaks to the book before resting. Using the item in Set mode ought to result in all spells being marked used to prevent any exploits.
