what about artifacts who's power is so strong they were broken to prevent their falling into the wrong hands? their rarity would be each be bur (or set random hells etc) so they'd be insanely hard to collect, and they'd each be artifacts themselves, so they could blow up, but once you get the pieces, more pieces for stronger benefits etc, then you use them in the proper order and voila!
was thinking dark blessing/divine grace, improved evasion, etc.
could be exclusive for demi/double demi etc.

Sounds like runes from Diablo 2 =)

Actually, I have been contemplating a final tier of rarity, like D2 uniques. Something that no one could ever conceivably get a full set of. Could also do 'broken' ones, but hadn't really thought about it. They would probably have very unique and special powers, and probably require something oddball to use, meaning you would probably need to work out a new build to utilize them. Funky

Well, I have to say...I HIGHLY DOUBT anyone, ANYONE, will EVER have a full set of Asmodeus Artifacts.

Maybe Asmodeus can drop a single random weapons, +20 enchantment, +15 shield AC, +16 all 9 elements and 2d12 all 9 elements. Requires level 60 and Dis tag to use. Not much chance of a Rapier dropping or anything, but you'd make an entirely new tank just to use it.

the irony about the D2 rarity system comes about when you realize that 'uniques' were more common than 'rares', which were in fact more unique due to the near infintesimal probability of two identical GOOD rares, vs 2 indentical uniques....hope that made sense.
i never meant to compare hg loot to d2 loot, because in my mind ALL hg loot is the equivalent of d2 uniques more or less. i was just thinking along the same lines as funky, a set of loot so rare and of such a tremendous pain in the ass to find, assemble and build a good character to use it on, that no one would plausibly be able to amass a full set.
i wasn't thinking runes, more along the lines of ability to trade pieces of them around instead of hoarding them (if they're going to blow up on use, and you have no use for your pieces, and you need 4 more pieces in order to get your piece to work, are you REALLY going to keep it around just in case or are you going to trade it?)

Dirty fighting FTW! ;D And if they do get implemented I think they should drop anywhere in legendary areas to add that twinge of suspense and excitement back to visiting the desert or other such places, as when burs were dropping there at very low rates.

You'll never find excitement in the desert, in my opinion. I've just gone in that circle waaaay too many times. The last time I had excitement there was when someone who wanted Archmage and I to come on a Hell run with them...started dropping Hamatulas, Raks, and other lovely things on our little five person level 40ish group

certain unnamed dm(s) used to drop surprises on my 3 am desert solo runs. its because of them that milo did desert run with illithid setup. though the beholders were the funniest surprise
