very odd thing, but heres the story: playing NWN and listening to my tunes on thursday. boot up the PC on friday, and there is no sound. then i blew my PSU (just got new one today hehe) here is what ive tried so far: checked to see if it was the stacj system by plugging in my iPod, and i got sound from the iPod. plugged headphones into the back of my PC, and no sound. done the basics (make sure mute wasnt on, the volume was high both on the system sound and realtek sound etc etc) this is what i have: Asus P5K SE mobo with built in sound (Realtek HD Audio Manager) and this is the device info: misc info: OS is XP 2 gig RAM 1 gig 8500

KC,
If you're PSU blew, then it's quite possible that it could have surged and damaged some components..in particular your motherboard. I have p5q now, but use the Asus D2X for my sound which I highly recommend if you want digital quality. Your integrated sound is probably fine, but it's really hard to know.
I assume you didn't change any internal wiring (even though the integrated sound should all be soldered). Check the other input/outputs, does the digital out (if you have a receiver) work, does the line out or rear channels work. Check the mic inputs, use the xp sound recorder to see if anything is detected.
I believe there is also a specific asus utility that lets you select what the outputs are set up for on the back panel.

the sound was gone before the PSU died, i ran some microsoft updates and stuff first to see if it was the problem before my PC was down for the count.
i aint changed any wiring (as ya say, its all soldered)
though i will check to see if the mic gets picked up a lil later today... will post here and let ya know in a few hrs
i wouldnt know if this is the problem, thursday the sound was fine, and all i done was play NWN and listen to music (as always) then friday when i booted up there was no sound... it was just instant, no warning or anything. but if this happens to be the problem... how would i go about trying to see if this is it? i may have put this PC together a few months ago, but when it comes to software, im totally clueless. (step by step instructions would be best for me to attempt this ^_^)

just reinstalled the sound drivers from the mobo CD, still nothing >_<
if i turn my stack system up REAL high, i can barly hear the sounds... though at risk of damaging my speakers... i aint keeping it on full volume =P
my volume range is -90db(quietest) - 00db(loudest)... usually -75db is loud enough, but im having to go to -10db to begin to hear anything

Ive had this happen before, twice actually on two different machines. The solution that worked for me was uninstalling the realtek high definition audio package kb888111 and reinstalling. Unfortunatly you are 'surposed' to request a new package from microsoft as the only way to get it... but... the link below is a direct link to a download for it. couponmeister.com/blog/HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe

ok, just also tested my devices, and theyre working properly. its picking up the mic, and its also saying sound is being produced... though i dont hear it >_< tried a system restore also and no luck
so, to make sure it wasnt the sound plug that was boinked, i plugged my headphones into the mic jack, and set the output as "headphones" but still no sound coming out of it either

Did you check that your speakers (or headphones) are all plugged into the correct spots? I know that sounds dumb but I once spent an hour troubleshooting an audio problem where that was exactly the cause. --Arek

yes... when i plug a device into the back, im able to select what it does (line in, line out, microphone, headphones etc)
but kleb might have been on to something... im currently running win xp SP3... apparently there have been problems with KB888111
so i guess my next question is, how would i revert back to SP2?

Unfortunatly SP3 doesnt support realtek high def audio, the microsoft folks say that they will be adding in this support in a future update. Currently you have to install all drivers etc before updating to SP3, once installed you will struggle to install anything new. It seems that the main issue with SP3 is that .dlls cant be properly installed, go microsoft! To fix this you need to track down Wups2.dll in your system32 folder, then set it to open with Regsvr32, also found in the system32 folder. Once done you need to double click .dlls to register them. You may have been running into the problem that your .dlls werent registering. Not only the ones from your sound drivers but also the ones from the realtek high def audio package. Reverting back to SP2 can be a tricky business as the update removal tools used by windows dont always work. The method for this is described here. Some people have found that rolling back to a checkpoint the day after the initial SP3 install worked. However, its unpredictable.
