I get this message when I take a toon to Zhentarim Outpost, specifically in the hallway in front of the Brewmaster's room. NWN stops responding and it kicks me out to the desktop. Any ideas?

It's a bug that some people say they should file a class action lawsuit against NVIDIA for (I'm not sure how serious they are). Basically, it sucks, and there's nothing you can do about it except keep hoping the next driver will fix. I'm stuck with a mobile version of NVIDIA's gfx card, so I hafta get my drivers from the laptop's manufacturer who's apparently very lazy with these things.... =(
Basically, nothing you can do. Other games will just freeze for a moment then recover, but NWN doesn't handle the error nicely unfortunately.

However, given that you can reproduce it deterministically.... you might want to get in contact with NVIDIA and help them fix the bug! That'd be awesome and legions of NVIDIA users would love you forever (and you, of course, already have my undying love.. but don't tell RuMp!)

I had the same problem. I ran microsoft update and looked under optional updates for my vid card. It installed the 169 drivers. I havn't had the problem since. Hope this helps.

It's the Nvidia Vista Display Driver. Simplest solution is to dump Vista. Otherwise, you're stuck just updating the OS and the drivers and hoping for the best.
When I used to run Vista, I got it with a slew of games that run perfectly now that I've switched back to XP.
EDIT: My original post wasn't clear even to me.

The funny thing is before I took my computer in to be repaired for a crashed HD, I never had this problem. Now, no matter what toon I take to that hallway in front of the Brewmaster's room, NWN stops working and I get that error message. And I have tried updating the driver and rolling back the driver and nothing helps. I even tried a generic driver and that was not a good idea. Oh, and switching back to XP is not an option either. It would invalidate the warranty the computer has. If I had switched to XP before the HD crashed it would have cost me a crapload of money to fix.

cant you dual-boot xp without invalidating the warrantee?
technically vista is still there but you have XP on it too. Not sure if thats an option but i can help you do it if you need a set of instructions i have done it many times.

For what it's worth, I get this too, in the last map of Thids. Very very inconvenient. I disabled HGE and that worked getting into the map - but I can't leave the map now.
I have the latest drivers and GeForce 8600 GT
Little tricky to get hell tagged now ... (kudos to the Thids run who waited till I eventually got on)

I've got the same issue on Thids. Glad to know it's not just me. Only crashed about 8 times in 4 minutes I noticed ifI zoomed in, it worked "ok", almost. I had about 5 seconds to move before I creashed.

This problem affects my laptop as well after 1.69 and XP SP3 (and almost everywhere, not just Penumbra). Do you have Shiny Water or Environment Shadows enabled? We've had numerous reports of environment shadows causing crashes in the Penumbra Overmind.

Thanks Acaos. I had both Shiny Water and Environment Shadows enabled. I've toggled them off, and will post an update here next time I'm in Thids.

PS Bahahhaha "Next Time" - after all these years, that was my first ever Thids trip!

This problem is getting worse. Now I crash in the Maze, of all places. I've disabled water and environment shadows, but after two nights of tedious mapping, I had several annoying an pointless crashes, and just now I crashed while speaking to the StrawberryRipple which means I blew a chance to get a IceCream (he won't speak to me after I relog) - On 315 while Cania was in progress, if it matters.
For what its worth, Vista keeps telling me I am up to date, and no drivers are available, but I just found a driver that came out last week on the NVIDIA website. I let you know how I get on.
Also, I've had no problems, and I've had this rig for the last year. What's new, I wonder?

I have very similar problems with my Nvidia 8600. All signs point to the drivers, but I don't know how far back to roll them (or if older versions are even available).
The flick-flick-flick-crash is very bad in Zhents, and lately I've been getting it a lot in the Drow areas. Last night I noticed it seemed to happen when there was a lot of black area on the screen. As described above, if I zoom in very close, the flickering stops and I can limp-along for a while (at an extreme close-up angle). When I zoomed back in the Drow Slums, and a lot of the blacked out area showed on my screen, it would start to flicker-crash again.
I am using the customized nwn.exe that allows way-far zoom outs, I just realized. Maybe I will try the original .exe for a bit and see if that makes a difference (although I've come to love the near-infinite zoom).

No change using the original nwmain.exe, same behaviour.
