I just watched the first episode of the serie.
I am in the middle of the first book (reading very slowly as its such a good reading that making it faster would just make it end faster lol) and Im impressed with the work, the book is so full of details that its very hard to fit in a movie, but they sure did a good job imo even though there are still a few lose pieces here and there... Like the direwolves not showing anywhere cept for bran's nameless one :(
Btw, this is one of the best books Ive read, thanks for posting this here :)
I dont know much about the world yet, but the openning video is really cool showing parts of the map ^^

be warned! Mr.Martin seems to have been spending all his time picking nose and getting the show going with little interest shown to actually finish the darn series. it has been years upon years the fan of the series waiting for the next volume to come out. Majority of the fans have silently accepted the possibilities the series may never get finished before Mr.Martin dies..

I've read his books in the past - while they are well written and enjoyable, I tend to avoid authors who have little respect for their fans.. he won't even support fan fiction (which he confuses with copyright violation). Well respected authors such as Simon R. Green and Jim Butcher recognize that this keeps fans entertained while waiting for the next book; and don't seem to share that confusion.
This kind of attitude where the author feels they're superior to their fans is one of the reasons I am against snoopy products in the house.

I'm not sure if you directed that at me, but I agree.. there are two sides of the story. Essentially, his stand is that fans and readers are there to provide him with income, he certainly got wealthy on them without being concerned about "what they want", and they can damn well wait as long as he wants them to. The fans feel they provided him with a lot of dosh, and if they want to make up fan fiction while they wait on his next book (several years and counting); then this is what they want to do. In fact, fans didn't even start getting "uppity" until he started threatening legal action against fans for fanfics that were penned after years of absence. Bottom line? You make the bed you lie in. I'm not saying the fans are right, I'm not saying he's right. Fact remains that many other authors are in similar positions (no books for many years); and yet they're not suing fans. Ugh. Here I go launching into a debate where Funky will surely smite me down for being incorrect (again).. sorry in advance

I read the full text of shards link (or about 70% of it ) and for what I got fans are kinda desperated to see the next books and the author is kinda desperated to not let them down and thus are doing the same chapters over and over untill they hit perfection so that people with torches wont get on his house saying his book is awfull and burn it down with him inside. He also said that the next 2 books after dance with dragons will be pretty fast so he can die at piece lol I also read that he want to either end the job or the job end with him lol Didnt see anything about fans being sued thou, so cant really discuss about that. Anyway the first book is AWSUM, really really great. Even if it doesnt get an end (which I fear) it will still have been a nice travelling around his world for me. I have also other "seven books collection" to read still while waiting lol the dark tower comes to mind now, stopped in the third book when the story was confusing me a lot more than the previous ones, but its yet another great collection to read.

Woot! Finally. Let's hope he starts on vol 6 soon.
The HBO series is really good. I'm looking forward to the third episode tonight. Maybe a little too much gore and softcore for my taste..true that it's all in the book, but it becomes a lot more graphic on the screen. Scenery and costuming is excellent, kept the script pretty close to the book and acting is top notch.

Ugh. Here I go launching into a debate where Funky will surely smite me down for being incorrect (again).. sorry in advance Lol. I'm as annoyed as the next person about his tardiness, but the stuff about the Entitlement generation certainly rings true after some of the shenanigans I've seen round these parts (not the first time I've heard that generalization about 'generation neXt', either). I don't think he's at all confused about fan fiction, I just think he's asserting his rights very assiduously, something made more necessary by his long wait between releases. He doesn't want someone forcing his storytelling hand with a popular piece of fan fiction, and he doesn't want to waive his copyright - both entirely understandable. That said, his books were getting bogged down at the end, a common malaise among authors that exceed trilogy in length of work. Between that and my annoyance at his delay, I'm not entirely sure I'll get the next in the series. By contrast, since I mentioned lengthy works of fantasy, Sanderson has taken Jordan's work and surpassed it - something his Sanderson's original works don't come close to doing (though Way of Kings was a good start). And, since I see someone waving the Tolkien banner, and it's yet to be said, I'll say it. The only thing remarkable about Tolkien's work is that he invented the genre (though that's quite a thing in itself, without him, no NWN either ). By comparison to today's fiction, they're quite cludgy and poorly written - in fact, Jackson far exceeded them with his films, actually improving them in the spirit of the original. That isn't just my opinion, by the way, but my father's as well - he's a Harvard PhD in English lit and a professor of English with 35 years under his belt (specializing in Milton's Paradise Lost). He used to teach Tolkien along with C.S. Lewis' Narnia series in a summer course on fiction (though I must add the caveat that he's also a fan of the Harry Potter books, as am I 0_0 ). Martin is by far better than Tolkien in most respects other than originality, though that's not saying a great deal. This has been referred to as a golden era of fantasy, and I don't think that's entirely book-jacket paper-pushing. As for the HBO series, I've been watching them. They did an excellent job, especially with the casting. I think the Imp, especially, was perfectly cast, along with the Lannisters. Though I still have trouble not seeing Boromir instead of Stark. >< Funky

Been watching this at Shard's place. Good series. I haven't read the books, which is slightly embarrassing.

Im liking the series. Really nice, though most of the "extra" scenes not present in the book have some kind of sex in it.
The book is awesome indeed, and thx gods the translation to portuguese is one of the best ones I've read.
I just wish I could watch them on TV normally just as they are out, now I need to either download it or watch almost a month later when they show it here in Brasil :(
