Hello fellow HG players, devs, immortals, demigods, demigods x5 and hello Otis(if you are sober enough to read this).
When I first hit level 60 with my open sub race (a devious kobold assassin!), as a new player with limited sources and unlimited time, I hit a roadblock.
As I understand the meaning of progression, my next step was including taking some major choices of action :
1) Continue playing on my first toon, in Hells, dragging parties, friends, family and their pets in there, until I get lucky to see a BUR book drop, roll high enough to take it and start a very viable character again from 0 to 60.
I had no hopes that I could find 2 of the same BUR books, or buy 2 of the same BUR books to upgrade the open sub-race to BUR race,so I already knew the kobold is going to be parked.
I cannot stress this enough,PERSONALLY, I repeat, PERSONALLY, knowing that I achieved the first newbie goal (hitting 60) and being able to use a BUR or UR subrace, but continue playing on an open sub race had a word circling in my mind : leeching. Now,I'm not saying that open sub races cannot be viable but in a gaming environment like HG, I doubt anyone has never thought of viability and performance while on high end runs like Hells and Abyss.
2) Park my kobold on level 60, and start 0-60 again with a UR race (a naturalis druid!).
I did. The result? By the time I hit 45, again, I realised that once I get my hands on a BUR book, this character will be probably be parked as well and forgotten, and myself I will have to do reroll and play the BUR race. Why? Because we simply want the best, for all the reasons I mentioned.
3) A more depressing option that I considered and I did for a short time is to farm, FARM mobs, the ones that drop 10k gold in order to gather enough resources to buy a BUR and re-do 0-60 with it.
== In between of thinking and rethinking the options 1 and option 2, since I am on vacation, and since I am indeed addicted to this AMAZING game, I've made another 3-4 characters to level 20 or so. By the time I hit 20 with them,I would realise that these toons were meant to be parked and forgotten toons as well, simply because I cannot have a 2nd Book of the SAME BUR race to upgrade them to,thus, as you can check it out, they are all deleted.==
The reason I listed the above,is to give you an idea and remind you of how a new player in today's HG environment feels like and his/her psychology. It is totally my point of view, and others may not share it. But,I can list another 4-5 new players I'm currently adventuring with (the names i prefer to not list unless I have direct permission) that are exactly in this situation I tried to describe..
The solution is simple. Eliminate the need for a second book in order to upgrade subraces. That way, when you make your first character, that said character will not have an imaginary tombstone above his head, knowing that it will never be played again once you get your first BUR. 2nd) Getting your hands on a BUR book should and must feel like you have gotten an upgrade on your existing toon, upgrading it and continue playing a stronger, better version of your first character. It should not feel like "Oh...great. Now, goodbye forever kobold, hello level 1 brownie", and should not feel like "Ok. Now to a second Brownie book..in a couple of months maybe".
Thank you for reading this.
I could just type my suggestion without personal references, just plain empty words of gaming terms like "oompf, grinding,qq nerf that omg way too much luck based, drop rates blah blah",or smarter suggestions like : "eliminate the 2nd book requirement only for the first toon of one's account, or instead of a 2nd book have an X amount of gold required".
Nope. I wanted the reader to be in a new player's shoes and FEEL the dilemma, with a paradigm of my personal take on the game.
This was typed while at the office on a coffee break, although posting this idea was in my head for some time now, and not being a native English speaker excuse the grammatical and typo errors.
