thanks bud
What happened I was on the game, and then a smell of heated, then a moment give all of a sudden nothing, my pc turned off.
I disconnected everything, opened the case, removed the dust, however I noticed that there was no more thermal paste between the fan and the processor, all the same I put everything back in place, reconnected everything and then I start, my desktop is in place, then my pc turns off. I don't know if it's the fact that there was no more thermal paste that was the problem or if it came from somewhere else, when I tested the processor fan was running fine, so it's not the problem obviously the dust but it was cleaned. So would it be the lack of thermal paste the problem I can't say I've been too long without tinkering with computers (even though it's been more than 20 years) that yeah I'm pretty lost with that
I think the problem is that the processor has reached the critical temperature and the security has turn off my pc. Now whether my processor was damaged or not I can't say.
Of course if some people who really know their stuff could give me some advice I would be grateful

Of course if some people who really know their stuff could give me some advice I would be grateful Get to the BIOS screen (F2, Del or whatever it tells you to press during startup) then you can have a look at your temperatures in real time and see what is going on, if the CPU temperature is constantly rising then you will see it there. Burning odours when using tech are rarely a good thing though.

Thanks Chain
The problem as I was saying is that when I start my pc, my desktop starts to display and then it shuts down, so from there I was asking if I would go and buy some thermal paste to put back if it could be enough so that it doesn't reach a level of heat so quickly and that would allow me to have the time precisely to check some things like for the bios
The thermal paste I did not know and for what I could understand this one lowers the temperature of approximately 3 to 12 degrees celcius.
And then I must admit that I have some fears, I don't want it to go wrong and that it sets fire (yes I know it's not very rational to think that but I fear fire, on two occasions I took people out of a burning building, the last time it was in 2015 so it's not so long ago. It's the kind of experience that leaves a deep scar that remains even years later) Anyway my fear is that if ever the safety shutdown for one reason or another would not work as an example because of the two times it overheated and that would have damaged my pc.

After you install on a new PC if you can get data from old PC drive you can copy your NWN files over to the new PC to keep your settings from the old setup namely helps with keys and account names for folks as well as many HG and CEP being able to just be dumped over.
For the PC in its state smells usually are bad can can be a blow cap most the times it is the power supply when I smell any typical "electrical" odors from a PC but it could be the board. Look at the capacitors(the little cylinders all over it) and see if any are leaking or have significant bulging. The thermal paste can dry out I wouldn't think there is none on the CPU but what is there might be all dried out apply new paste but clean both the CPU and the cooler contact areas well with some alcohol typically Isopropyl is best and make sure they are either out and dry before reinstalling or at least that the board is unplugged from any power.

Thanks Jim
I had not thought that the motherboard could have been damaged, thank you for reminding me. As for the power supply, no problem, it's ok.
As for the keys, no problem, I still have my game manual and they are all there.
The thermal paste between the fan and the cpu was indeed very very dry, hence my question about whether I would put some back if it would solve the problem, do not forget that my pc is 8 or 9 years old. Besides the last time I tinkered on a computer well it was on this one and so since I forgot many things, but well that's the works of time especially when we become old
If I buy a new PC I plan to put the hard drive of my old PC in slave, however I intend to reinstall the whole game, obviously I will have to reinstall arf2, hgx, etc, but also I will try this time to add the images for my toons as well as the voices what I had not done on my old PC and that bothered me a lot.

Finally I bought a computer and I should have it tomorrow, I'll have to configure my preferences, but also install anti virus, various utilities, and finally nwn, I hope I won't have to sweat reinstalling nwn, so I'll have to look for the images and voices of characters.
As for my old computer a tech said there's a good chance it wasn't damaged so I'll try to get it back in order and keep it as a spare.

Just stick the old HD in the new machine and you can then copy over your NWN as it was.

Is the new PC the same brand as the old one? If so try plugging your old HDD where the new HDD is plugged in. I've had a lot of luck(especially in the last 5 or so years) with Windows 7 and up re configuring to new hardware as long as it's Dell to Dell or HP to HP, etc...

Simple, reinstall NWN and patch it as required to get it up to date then simply replace the new folder thats been created with the one from your old PC and bingo all your old images and stuff will be present.

I recently did a complete reinstall (reset) on my PC. I just took the main NWN folder from OS (C:) and put it on an external hard drive. Did the Reset, then took the main NWN folder from the external hard drive and put it back into the OS (C:) . I didn't have to do anything else and all works fine. It should work the same going from PC to PC. Growly

Hey Growly! Good to see you still around. I'm looking at getting NWN reinstalled on a new computer. I miss it, and I think I can get my kids interested. Hope to see you in-game.
