Ok maybe this ain't a bug... but I wanted to open a forum of thought around this. No offences given or intended here, just a player throwing thoughts onto paper.
Being that my pc is relatively stable, I reccon I don't have the problems of crashing as often as most people (anymore).. but heres the thing. If you count average rates, you'd find a crash occurs in the party at least once every three hours of play (on a side note, I hear that some runs can actually go this long - so the significant thing is, the crashing is a problem) A caster crashes and their spells go *plink* (translation: becomes as though all used up - even if you've just rested before crashing). About that time they erupt into pink mist if there's so much as a sniff of enemies in the proximity.. pretty but seriously, I don't think it's a good thing.
A melee character (actually that includes clerics and druids to a lesser extent) can relog, and simply poke whatever is in the way till it dies. Mages don't have this luxury - their strength is countered by the sacrifices they make in the game balance as it stands.
I can hear the argument on "they'll exploit and log to replenish spells". Ok, a thought I had here. Bear with me - this may take some time to explain, and I suck at explaining things.
Take Sokor Blackcloth, a 30th level Wizard. For the sake of the example, he has:
Spell lvl -> Slots
1 -> 4
2 -> 8
3 -> 10
4 -> 15
5 -> 15
6 -> 15
7 -> 15
8 -> 18
9 -> 20
1) Mage has rested. All spells available.
2) He crashes. AUGH.
3) He logs back in.
4) He now has the following spells castable, based on the formula (1 cast per 5 caster levels, per spell level acquired):
Spell lvl -> Slots
1 -> 4
2 -> 6
3 -> 6
4 -> 6
5 -> 6
6 -> 6
7 -> 6
8 -> 6
9 -> 6
These are the first 6 slots in the book, to keep things predictable for wizards - sorcerers obviously this is slots not spells.
Now this could be exploited, yes. I hear that response already being formulated - however, all we're doing is making it so the mage is not completely defenceless BUT it's not so much of a painful 'give' in terms of folks that may log to get spells back.. er, imo anyway.
**Alternatively, in order to balance crashes and keep things equal, could melee types be stripped and unarmed when they log? J/K
