in light of the extra attack granted to xbows, i'd like to propose that shortbows get a defensive bonus to make them more attractive as weapons.
i'd like to suggest something along the lines of concealment, or epic dodge. while i realize both of these are significant defensive bonuses, i believe that they wouldn't be throwing off the balance of established builds, as current AA builds rely on the extra attacks from DB weapons, as well as the broad range of damage from the arrows, in order to maximize their damage output.
if the bonuses would be too much (as erinyes could easily focus in both weapons) the advantages for shortbows could be tied into size, like halflings and gnomes, or classes such as rogue, shadowdancer, etc which are not ideal classes to mix with arcane archers.
if balance defensively would prove too difficult or impractical, then perhaps some offensive bolstering such as improved sneak attack etc.
furthermore, i believe that there should be a BUR quiver which doesn't do much in the way of dmg, but focuses more on support. for instance if the BUR quiver (BQ) could create, 3 times a day, a set of ten L9 grapple arrows, with a dc designed to hit 50-75% of hells critters, 3 times/day, a set of gust arrows, etc. no mords/breach, as devariel arrows already exists and function in that capacity.
i hope to stir up some ideas for making ranger/rogue non-AA archers practical in combat and helpful in parties. hopefully the creation of a few items will help start that process, eventually leading to a few feat upgrades etc for non-AA archers...
