I agree with uncanny. Casters are trouble.

Caster just require more knowledge and gear to be effective. Though I feel that something like a Str BFM can be an effective tank, easier on gear due to 100% immunity, and have some spell casting flair.

Please don't put people off playing casters, I'd like more people to play casters so that I can play mine own tanks occasionally, believe it or not I do prefer them to casters Cata

I am gonna post two variants of wizard builds I came up with. Let me know when you all think of the builds and which I should follow:
Pure Wizard 40 Wizard Spell Penetration Greater Spell Penetration Spell Focus: Necromancy Greater Spell Focus: Necromancy Spell Focus: Conjuration Greater Spell Focus: Conjuration Empower Spell Spell Focus, Greater Spell Focus: Illusion Spell Focus: Transmutation Greater Spell Focus: Transmutation
Great Intelligence 1 Great Intelligence 2 Great Intelligence 3 Great Intelligence 4 Great Intelligence 5 Great Intelligence 6 Great Intelligence 7 Great Intelligence 8 Epic Spell Penetration Epic Spell Focus: Conjuration Epic Spell Focus: Necromancy Epic Spell Focus: Illusion Epic Spell Focus: Transmutation
Great Intelligence 9 Great Intelligence 10 Legendary Spell Penetration Legendary Spell Focus: Conjuration Legendary Spell Focus: Necromancy Legendary Spell Focus: Illusion Extended Spell ---------------------------------------------------- Rogue Wizard 39 Wizard/1 Rogue Spell Penetration Greater Spell Penetration Spell Focus: Necromancy Greater Spell Focus: Necromancy Spell Focus: Conjuration Greater Spell Focus: Conjuration Empower Spell Spell Focus, Greater Spell Focus: Illusion Spell Focus: Transmutation Greater Spell Focus: Transmutation
Great Intelligence 9 Great Intelligence 10 Legendary Spell Penetration Legendary Spell Focus: Conjuration Legendary Spell Focus: Necromancy Legendary Spell Focus: Illusion Epic Skill Focus: Open Lock

the coding on here uses [ and ] instead of < and >
Those both look good the Rogue one I am guessing you splash in 1 level of rogue at 40 for a skill dump as that is all you would need. I would consider LSF Transmutation over LSF Conjuration myself but I'm not entirely sure how much LSF Conjuration improves things like the Orb spells. Both look solid what race are you planning to use? There is also a easily acquired item at L41+, which is the requirement to use, which when used is consumed and grants you Epic Spell Focus in a given spell focus there is also one which does the same for Spell penetration only one of the foci books or the penetration book may be used on a toon if that doesn't make sense someone else might be able to explain it better

Using Planewalker and think of taking evocation foci instead of spell penetration feats and reading the spell penetration book.

I would suggest reading the evocation tome as it is easy to come by and not having foci in it hurts the least so it can wait till L41+. Planewalker is a great race I have a fighter using it however it is not an Open subrace so you would need to get a Planewalker race book and use it to tag your account with it before you can make a Planewalker. I think a Planewalker wizard would be a great starter build as you won't need to worry about the survival items on certain runs and can keep your defensive or caster gear on. For an Open race Human Air Gensai is decent it also gives you an experience point bonus for being a Wizard. Tinker Gnome would not be bad as you get free SF Illusion. The last suggested Open race I can currently think of would be Derrzagon Dwarf.

I do have the planewalker subrace available thanks to Player99-9. Which build should I follow until I get a better subrace.

equally solid the Rogue splash has more versatility but unlike a PM version I think the -1 CL from Pure is more costly so I would probably stick to pure.

Rogue Wizard 40 Wizard Spell focus: divination Greater Spell Focus: divination Spell Focus: Necromancy Greater Spell Focus: Necromancy Spell Focus: Conjuration Greater Spell Focus: Conjuration Empower Spell Spell Focus, Greater Spell Focus: Illusion Spell Focus: Transmutation Greater Spell Focus: Transmutation Great Intelligence 1 Great Intelligence 2 Great Intelligence 3 Great Intelligence 4 Great Intelligence 5 Great Intelligence 6 Great Intelligence 7 Great Intelligence 8 Epic Spell Focus: Divination Epic Spell Focus: Conjuration Epic Spell Focus: Necromancy Epic Spell Focus: Illusion Epic Spell Focus: Transmutation Read Spell penetration book (from AA) Legendary levels: Great Intelligence 9 Great Intelligence 10 Legendary Spell Penetration Legendary Spell Focus: Conjuration Legendary Spell Focus: Necromancy Legendary Spell Focus: Illusion Epic Spell Greater Ruin Remember you need to be ELF if you want rogue splash, so later you can get skills maxed to 63 using Able Learner but if you really want to play the wizard in later areas I would recommend going pure. For more soak/conceal/CL. Greater ruin along with 50 points in spellcraft will give you 2 uses/rest. This spell is really important to have as a wizard imo, more important than extend spell. As it will have a DC 65 to insta kill almost everything you can insta kill one way or other but just with a click and really cool animation It is also a party saver during randoms in hells/abyss but that will only come later for you, but still I would recommend taking it now, cuz reincarnating wizard is a pain even if you have all scrolls.

I'd consider swapping Conj for Evo. Of course it all depends on your play style but I find myself using Evo spells far more often than Conj spells. Both are damage focused schools but Evo spells are more of the "fireball" type spells, a blast of damage to all monsters in an area of effect, while Conj spells are the damage clouds (cloudkill, acid/cold/elec clouds, evard's, etc) and the HG custom Orb spells which affect only a single target.

Evocation spells works without focus at least for half damage while conjuration only works with focus (All Orbs and Evards for example) Also conjuration Epic spell is like 100 times better than evocation epic spell, and very useful in LL when massing runs I have evocation on my main wiz but on my HC one that wont have max DC I just forgot about it as I would be doing half damage most of the times anyway.

Oh shoot I forgot about the Conj epic Bigby swarm, I just reincarnated my Wiz that had both Conj and Evo and dropped Conj for Trans. Darn it if I'd considered that, I would have kept Conj and dropped Evo. Oh well. Always listen to Johnny when it comes to casters! I'll learn my lesson eventually.
