Hi there! I'm new here, so you all can call me TZ-. Whenever I try to log onto the portal server, it says I am missing a few .hak files. I didn't change anything in my folder or download any add-ons so I don't understand what I would be missing. Is there any files or folders I have to download to play on the servers?
Also, do the basic builds work here? I have only played offline and loved my build I had there, it was 15 Ranger, 24 Wizard, 1 Monk, robe wearer and dual wielding longswords. Loved this build and wondering if it would work here? If not, what's a good toon to start out with?
Fast replies would be awesome as I really want to get started here and meet all of you!

Firstly welcome to HG.
Secondly you will learn quickly that the standard NWN Builds you used in the normal campaign game will not work on HG.
My advice would be to look at the builds on the forums.
Most of the builds posted are proven working builds.

my guess melee +spells/casting In which case Id say DSM/BFM or SM might be an interest for him DSM and BFM being the close to a casting tank where the SM is just a melee tank with candy sweet delicious candy. I'm guessing here anyhow hope to see you in game please don't hesitate to ask to get help with builds and such we have a forums section dedicated to builds post there what type of build you want and plenty should respond.

I was reading along the builds section and such while my ARF continues to download the Higherground Enhanced Pack, seems as though the dragon disciple class is the easiest to gear and such. But what I enjoyed about the ranger/wizard/monk build was the fact I could cast as primary, and if they got close they couldnt flatfoot me when I would start bashing with my longswords. So I guess a caster would be best, I like the way wizards function better in more areas (being able to memorize any spell you need).
So what would be best for me? Not sure what I will like, though arcane was wizard or sorcerer, so either of those would suit me. Like I said I like versatile characters, so any suggestions would be great!

HG kinda has a min max to its building you tend to have to focus and specialize that said I believe a Wizard is capable of having the most spell foci to add versatility.

Hey, welcome to HG and the forums. As Cata suggested up top, our builds forums have hundreds of builds for classes that might interest you - it might be quickest just to take a look there and see what interests you. There's also an Open Builds forums for builds that don't require subraces unlocked during play. Funky

As a new user you will be limited to Open subraces you can find a list of them and thier details here. wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/RacesThe focus varies with what you want to do but a Wizard can usually fit in 5 Foci IIRC. I would say Illusion is important as it effects a primary defensive spell and improves Wierd DC which is a great instant death spell it is about the only foci I strongly suggest. The rest are mostly flavor and for which runs you want to be great help on. Transmuation has nice disablers and a few instant death spells plus a solid epic that will create a wall around the caster preventing most enemies from being able to attack you. Necromancy is another great instant death focus but a Palemaster will put any other arcane necro focus user to shame but the epic is very useful and almost a must for atleast one run Divination is really nice epic and helps some buff spells also improves Power Word spells but mostly limited use Conjuration has lots of direct damage spells and a fairly solid epic Evocation mostly damage spells but also can help Bigby hands which are very useful and the epic itsn't terrible but its on of the least useful Enchantment improves GMW and the Epic is ok at best IMO not sure what else it does but Im sure there is more Abjuration is solid all around for debuffing and a few places it really helps as you can use banish to remove some enemies That about covers the foci I believe and my quick thoughts on them

Hey TZ,
I don't mean to be rude - but in your first swing through HG, avoid playing the casting classes. There's three big reasons for this. 1) There are a mass of custom spells. A large percentage of them are there to create damage variation, and if you can't cast certain damage types, forget about even hurting a chunk of mobs. 2) Almost every single spell actually works here - not like most worlds where you can rely on a handful of spells. It makes it MUCH more entertaining, and more fun longer term; but personally imho you might get frustrated trying to figure out what spells to load on runs past mid-epic. 3) Them critters have NASTY spell resistance once you hit legendary levels (try 10 levels above the average level groups are going there to start, getting worse as you progress). A lvl51 caster in a certain area that mid-level-40 toons hang out frequently will face spell resistance of around 65 or more. You'll be reliant on Mords for every mob, or a decent roll of the dice for SP.
My suggestion would be to make a nice dex tanker to learn about the world. And given that you like Ranger, you're in luck: rangers are one of the more stable builds on HG (take a look at a build for pure ranger in the Open Race forum; it's a build stable for even the harder areas of the world). If you still really want to do a caster; I would suggest looking at a pale master (pm's are improved here, to the point that theyre very viable even in endgame areas). Spell selection is reasonably small, spell penetration is decently high, and the extra ac is a nice bonus
