I may be jumping the gun here, I've never been any good at picking up the subtle hints that Funky says he keeps slipping into his posts, but here goes anyway...
I've been playing HG for about 6 months, and just this last week, got a toon to a point where I felt reasonably confident of being well equipped and able to survive all the runs bar Hell and Pyramid. When I say survive, I mean not be a total lead weight to the party and actually contribute in a meaningful way...I still die on these runs, I hate living sand , but I finally feel like an asset rather than a burden to a party.
I've managed to collect about a dozen URs and a heap of rare immunity rings. I also have Pixie, Mino and Thri-Kreen sub races. I've never seen a BUR.
So after 6 months of daily playing, I'm still farming runs like Thids, Beholders and Desert looking for gear...it's starting to get repetitive. I was hoping to try Hell in the coming days to try to get my hands on some of the great set loot and BURs to be had there...
...then I saw the latest update...
Several months ago there were a couple of posts pointing out the huge gulf between the haves and the have nots on the server. The posts discussed how hard it was for new players to get going and find themselves some decent gear. As far as I know, nothing has changed. The advice is still the same...use the builds on the forums, party up with people, try to get a group of friends that play at the same time, etc.
How can the latest update, in particular the change to hardcore mode, do anything other than make it even harder for new players to the mod and thereby widen the gap between the haves and the have nots?
One of the reasons given was that the server was becoming to easy. Too easy for who?
Too easy for the people who have been playing here for years, have dozens and dozens of URs, not to mention the BURs, great sub races, etc., etc.
As I previously said, it's taken me six months of constant play to get to a point where I felt I could attempt to do the Hell runs to get some great gear, and the goal posts have just been moved because it was deemed "too easy".
I should also point out that I had friends already playing here when I started, so I had a leg up with some gear and gp, and build Ideas and suggestions.
Whats the goal here? Should a new player expect to play daily for 8 months before they try Hell? A year? What has been implemented to keep the people like me, who have been here a while but are still (to quote the previous post on the haves and have nots) struggling to get from group 2 to group 3 on the server?
Or are these runs expected to be for the hardcore or long time players only?
I realise that HG is almost a living thing, constantly evolving and changing, but it seems to me that all the focus is on the long term player, and not the new players or the ones like me that have put in the hard yards but still seem to only be treadig water.
I also realise this is a bit of a negetive post, but I'm feeling pretty frustrated that it's back to farming for me, and possibly back to farming lower level areas again and being dragged through runs, looking for even more URs with a hope of surviving Hell runs.
Eventually, with enough time put into playing, everyone will find any mod 'too easy'. Thats inevitable. Making the server harder and harder, just to keep it challenging for a few people who have been playing here for years, just inhibits new players from playing here.
