I am going to start an HC char on Thursday at ~9:00EST (GMT-5) and play for about 2 hrs (or until dead). I will then attempt to run this same char every thursday for the same time frame. I am planning on trying to run the server in the intended story line (ie no staying at arctic to level. Actually is there any story line reason to go to arctic?). If anyone else is interested, PLEASE feel free to join me.
Thanks
Draengold
Current HC party Khalanna, Ranger/Rogue Lvl 7 Jenna, Dwarf of Steel Fighter Lvl 5 Gloigan StoneAnvil, Cleric Lvl 3

Sounds interesting i may join ya, if i remember. The artic has its own storyline, though it doesn't seem to be finished.
BTW Draen, what class are you playing, i think a HC party will really benefit from a good mix of toons. Personally I was thinking a rogue or a str tank.

Was thinking of playing it safe and going cleric. Unless it looks like we will have a big group, then I might go wizard if we have another healer.

Well i'm probably gonna make a fighter rogue then, it will be good to be able to open chests, since we'll need every bit of loot we can find. I'll probably aspire to become a wm, though I'll most likely die before that happens.

I'd like to join you guys if I'm around at that time, may not be though.
My question is, were the HC rules applied already? I didn't see any post/update message hinting that they were...

I don't beleive Funky has implimented any rules/scripts yet. The basic rules of play seem to be: No gaining of loot/items/gp from others. Trade with party-members is OK. No partying with non-HC toons. No trading with non-HC Toons. No farming of areas ... finish the map and move on. If you are unlucky enough to fugue, delete the character. (personally I Have no problem with off-loading any decent items to your NON-HC toons before deletion. Other ppl may differ). No double-logging. especially no dragging innefective toons through tough areas by clearing it, loggin them to run to next map, loging tough toon to clear, relogging weak one ... No logging a rogue to open chests. either bring a hardcore rogue along, or leave it locked.
Me, I would also add no pushing through doors, no logging to perma-buff weapons, no utilising any of this sort of action. Stay in character, this is HardCore, not metagaming.

I am personally planning on following what Gruntgruntson elaborated, with the addition of not using any secret/UR subbys. My basic philosiphy on this is that you play HC to feel a certain sense of satisfaction at what you have accomplished. Honor system is perfect for this, since the only real reward for playing HC is personal satisfaction. If you cheat, the main person you are cheating is yourself.

I also would like to get in on this. Will probably start a new account just for HC charcters. Can we implement some sort of naming convention for HC characters. Even just putting [HC] in the name would be enough to let everyone know that these are Hardcore characters and allow others to find one another. so 9pm est? I'll be there tonight.
Jenna
edit - oh and i will probably be playing either a DD or a modified staff master. And I agree with Draengold about the subraces.

I started my toon last nite, I decided to go ranger/rogue. I did however use a secret subrace (Kurai). I saw no harm in it and it was either Kurai or Derrzagon, so I went with what made more sense as far as roleplaying, and a Dwarven ranger is a bit of an oxymoron in that sense. Anyways I did the tavern cellar and the cemetary/ first level of crypt, and was ecstatic to save up enough to buy ..... drumroll plz .... a bag of holding ! Running to town everytime I found an armor was not so exciting. I also grouped up with another hc toon for a bit, and he said he'd like to join us tonight if he is able. He has a level 5 toon, but said he'd probably make a new one as he wasnt crazy about his lvl 5.
Well sorry for starting without you guys, but once I rolled up my toon I just had to take her out and kill some rats and one thing led to another. I'm looking forward to putting together a group tonight though.
And I'm pretty sure that [HC] is gonna be the naming convention used, I've seen others using it and I'm pretty sure thats what Funky is gonna use for the HC rules to be implemented soon.

As said before, if you use [HC] in your name your character will be subjected to the scripted Hardcore system whether you like it or not, when it is added. Funky

Arriving in Ascension, Jenna, Dwarf of Steel, took a stroll past the docks and into the main part of town, by passing the temple on her way. Little did she know that the gods would take notice of her slight later on.... Her first stop was at the town armory. She had heard many rumors of fearsome beetles who breathed fire and could take a dwarf's leg off in one slice of their razor sharp mandibles. With what little gold she had left after paying her passage to Ascension, she purchased a shield and a new axe. While not a weapon of much quality, the blade was sharp and it seemed only a little out of balance. Taking some practice swings, to the horror of a nearby half-dragon, she headed out to see what else she could purchase. Fortunately for her, she found a deal down the road a bit. A loney old man was giving away scrolls that would heal an injured adventurer...for free! Grabbing some of these, she headed of to the west of town to find some of these killer beetles.
Jenna soon found herself confronted by a beetle, near to dwarf size. Clicking it's mandibles, it reared back and spewed forth a jet of fire. Fortunately, a dwarfs' skin is made of tougher stuff. Hefting her axe, she charged the creature and with a forceful swing ripped it asunder. Having split it in twain, she discovered that it's stomach seemed to glow. Thinking that this may come in handy, she plucked it out and went hunting for more...
After clearing the area of these supposedly fearsome creatures and having turned over _every_ rock, she ventured into the cave where they seemed to be emanating from. Sure enough, there were plenty more in here. Dispatching these, Jenna rounded a corner to behold a truly fearsome sight! There, standing before her, was a fire beetle the size of a house! Taking a swig of some good dwarven ale, Jenna rushed the enormous beast. To her horror, her attacks seemed to bounce of it's hide, leaving only dents. It's fire also seemed to be proportional to its size, leaving singe marks. Grabbing for her ale, she took a swallow and was surprised to be returned to full health. Thinking the gods favored her, she took a gigantic swing at the beast, connecting with it's vulnerable underbelly, which is good because it's about the only thing she could reach, she ripped it's guts out, climbed inside, and attacked from in there. Finding it's belly, she sliced it free from the connecting tissue and escaped. The beast was no more.
After several more encounters, she came upon Khalanna, a ranger. Deciding it may be in their best interest to travel together, they ventured deeper into the cave. Finding a tunnel leading downward, they descended into the depths only to find more beetles that seemed in dire need of having an axe and some arrows stuck into them. However, these beetles not only breathed and spat fire, they used acid! It was rough going but we managed to defeat these and were just starting to celebrate our victory when we heard...thud..click, click...thud..click...Looking over our shoulders, there standing behind us was a giant green and black beetle. Around it's feet were several smaller, brown beetles that gave off a stench so obnoxious, you would have thought the whole dwarven nation had just taken off their boots simultaneously. We had no chance to decide to run as they were already upon us. The fighting was intense. At times, the stench was so powerful, we couldn't see straight to aim. Beetles seemed to be everywhere, biting anything that was exposed. But Khalanna, in a moment of clear headedness, grabbed the enchanted arrows he had saved just for such a situation, shot and blinded the gigantic beast allowing Jenna to rush in and do her "thing". Quickly, the other beetles fell before us. Bloodied, we staggered to town to recuperate and replenish our supplies.
After several days of rest, we decided to check out a graveyard that the locals were saying was inhabited by the dead. On our way to the graveyard, we passed through a much smaller cemetery. Tripping over a branch, Jenna nearly stumbled headlong into an open grave. If it were not for the quick reflexes of Khalanna, she may still have been stuck down there. Without much thought of the incident, we continued onward.
The cemetery was unlike anything either of us had ever seen. It was immense and to top it all off, we had come upon it at night. Fog rolled across the grounds and in the distance a raven crowed. Being a dwarf and not overly superstitious about such things, Jenna walked up to the gate and entered the graveyard. Khalanna, being more wiser, took out some holy water that he had thought to buy while we were in town. Not even four steps into the graveyard we heard a sound as of wet clothes being sloshed together. Turning, we gazed upon a most dreadful sight. Rising up before us from the ground, the decaying bodies of the recent, and not so recent dead turned and started to advance upon us. Well, this is what we came here for I thought to myself. Advancing into the hordes, I slashed and hacked but they just seemed to keep coming. Their claws tore through my armor and burned my skin, it was then that I knew I was done for. As I staggered to the ground, I looked up to see a face that did not belong there, it was another dwarf. Surely I was hallucinating or already dead! But the kind dwarf laid his hands upon my head, speaking words of prayer to his gods, he healed me of my wounds. Rising up, I attacked with renewed vigor. With Khalanna firing arrows and throwing holy water, the new dwarf and I were able to vanquish the undead creatures. Thanking him, we discovered that his name was Gloigan Stoneanvil and a cleric. We quickly decided to allow him to join our party. As we turned to continue further, a zombie, which had crept as silent as death up upon us, raised his clawed hand and with one immensely power swipe cut open my neck. As I lay upon the ground clutching my ruined neck, Gloigan and Khalanna dispatched the abomination. Turning back to help me, they discovered that it was too late. Removing his cross, Gloigan started to perform the last rights. Halting him, Khalanna took from her pack a scroll case engraved with runes of protection and preservation. With utmost care, she removed a scroll and began to speak the words written there. Gasping as her neck re-knitted itself back together, Jenna gave thanks to Khalanna and vowed never again to forget to pray to the gods every time she passed by their temple. Using one of the heal paks the lonely old man had given her, she found her health restored. Deciding, that the gods had exacted their vengeance and would allow us to start anew, we headed into the crypts below the cemetery.
The crypts were enormous, and filled with the walking dead. Every corner brought us face to face with skeletons and zombies. After many hours of searching every single nook and cranny, picking up every gem, every necklace, every arrow and bolt we could find, we found stairs leading further downward. We had had much luck thus far so we took the stairs down. Not only were there more undead but some evil presence had given them a semblance of intelligence. The skeletons could cast spells! Having been used to fighting mindless autonomons, we were surprised when a skeleton raised his hands and ensnared the three of us in a spider like web. With only the quick thinking of Khalanna and the prayers of Gloigan, did we escape that encounter. Things were not going so well. Not only did the undead now cast spells but they caused disease where ever they opened a wound. Deciding it was time we left before we died, we opened a door, thinking it lead out to behold a creature of true vileness. It had the appearance of a zombie but it's gaze was not vacant, in fact, the eyes seemed to burn with a fire of hatred so deep, it would sear your soul. It's claws dripped with venom. Screaming, we slammed the door shut and wedged some spare items into the frame to keep it closed as we ran from the crypts and back to town.
We decided at that point we would need much more time to prepare before going back so we sold off our loot and split the remaining gear we had found that seemed to be enchanted in some form. Vowing to return in a weeks time, we headed off to the inn....
